Hakan: Muhafız (The Protector) & Sihirli Annem (My Magical Mom) Reviews

Dear Reader: I’ve ended reviewing the Netflix series Hakan: Muhafız, The Protector.

I am now beginning to review my favorite family show of all time: Sihirli Annem (My Magical Mother -a show I feel really could help change the world)!!

Since there are not many Hakan episodes, and there will be many Sihirli Annem episodes to review, I’m linking the Sihirli Annem reviews below the Hakan reviews: just click here

(Sihirli Annem, btw, is also not a Fairy Tale, but does feature Fairies! 🙂 …)

Hakan: Muhafız

I mention in each review, or I try to, my own experiences living in the city ‘Stanbul, with 25 million people, half of whom arrived yesterday from the Anadolu with their dreams in a truck, and built a house overnight.*

The word Muhafız literally means Protector, but I wish that Netflix had found another way to keep Hakan in the title of the show. I loved this show the instant I saw it, even though my experiences of this historic city were not good, personally, when I worked there. I learned a lot from living there, and am also learning a lot from this show, some of which helps to put my experiences as an American ex-pat working in Istanbul into a new perspective. I hope that you find meaning, as I have, in these episodes inspired by the novel, Karakalem ve Bir Delikanlinin Tuhaf Hikayesi, by N. İpek Gökdel (everywhere else, her first name, Nilüfer, is spelled out in the show credits, but always abbreviated in book credits, if you search for the books…).

And remember: “Bu bir masal degil.” -“This is not a fairy tale.

*(yes, seriously: look up Gecekondu…)

          Soru degil! Hepemiz ogreniyoruz!! 🙂

No worries! My speaking and writing is rubbish! I still keep the Turkish CCs on to watch new shows, but shows like Sihirli Annem I can understand with no problem! 🙂 Sorry, back to writing in Turkish!

Elif Safag’in yazilari bir Izmirli arkadas bana dedi.

            1. No, but I don’t use English subtitles. For me, immersion in the target language works better, as English pulls me out of the show.

These days, I only need the Turkish CCs when I miss a word, which only happens now a few times per episode on new shows, like Yakamoz-245 (the new submarine show on Netflix).

        2. Bu hafta ‘Senin Hikayeni Anlat’ haftadir olarak, sizin hikaye’inize nedir, acaba?

(sorry, what I’m trying to say is: This week being “Tell your story week,” what is your story?)

Ben, hem Istanbul’da hem Izmir’de calistim, 2004-2005’ta, ve simdi Turkcemi kaybetmemek icin calisiyorum!

          🙂

Ya siz? Nereden Turkce ogrendiniz, acaba, Jess Hanim?

En sevdiginiz kitabi nedir, Jess Hanim?
