Minbari Mondays, The Fall of Night, and Risks

       This week’s report, the last of our year 2259 CE,  is sent to us from our future by Ranger Mayann, writing to us from Minbar, where she is stationed:

Greetings, from Tuzanor: 

          As the Captain did what was right, coming to the very brink of war with the Centauri to do so, your Earth government fell deeper into darkness.  The courage of Ivanova, in resisting the temptation of an early promotion through dishonorable vigilance, showed again during the battle, as it would later on, in even larger battles.  I am not permitted to say more.  My order has become aware of this letter, and is not happy with me, as a result.

         We have all taken grave risks, this day, from your Captain, in risking war to do what was humanitarian and right, to Ivanova, risking her career, in refusing an easy way up your chain of command, to Kosh himself, risking “being recognized” by the wrong ones, to me, risking my place in my order to bring you this letter.  Not all risks win the day.

                  Shira’s addendum:                   

                 I love the beginning of the episode with the attachés meeting for drinks and complaints, and the “Makes me nervous.” at the end! 

                 I was stunned by the ending: “Sometimes peace is another word for surrender, and secrets have a way of getting out.”  What a beautiful Chanukkah implication of the miraculous victory, as Ivanova lights the candles and proclaims B5 “our last, best hope for victory.”

    And it’s made more poignant by the Jewish-looking store owner’s shop being closed by Nazi-like arm band wearing Ministry of Peace thugs, sorry, “officers” as they’re called.

Minbari Mondays, Comes the Inquisitor, and Testing

       This week’s report, near the end of our year 2259 CE, sent to us from our future by Ranger Mayann, writing to us from Minbar, where she is stationed:

Greetings, from Tuzanor: 

         This day was one of testing, for both the Narn and for our order, the Anla’Shok.  First, G’Kar reminded everyone that Narn still existed, while Delenn’s survival depended on her being the right person, in the right place, at the right time, and for the right reasons.   Ending with her offer to die there, unnoticed, in the dark for one person, she showed her belief in us.  We, the members of her order, would never rest, never stop, until the goal she shared with us was attained.  This she knew, and held on to during her ordeal.    This was what won the verdict from the vile “man remembered not as a reformer, not as a prophet, not as a messenger” but only as a forgettable Jack.

                  Shira’s addendum:                   

                 I was greatly impressed with JMS’ way of showing disdain for ‘The Ripper,’ who is indeed, perfectly suited for this job.  I love his bitterness at the end, with just the hint of having seen “the terrible depth of my error.”    Yet, I couldn’t help but still be moved at his ability to wish the Captain good luck on his own quest.  Maybe even the worst human beings can be redeemed, with the help of some ruthless extraterrestrial jerks?  Or maybe not.

    And Mr. Garibaldi, like Harry Potter, is willing to break the rules when needed, and this helps G’Kar and the Narn, and wins my love for him, despite his personal faults.

Minbari Mondays, The Long Twilight Struggle, and Listening

       This week’s report, in our year 2259 CE, sent to us from our future by Ranger Mayann, writing to us from Minbar, where she is stationed:

—

Greetings, from Tuzanor: 

         This day was one of darkness, and of light.  Draal, formerly one of the Minbari religious caste, now travels out among the stars, guiding the Great Machine on Epsilon 3.  From it, he hears much, including the doings of those on your Babylon station.  In this set of incidents, Draal sent for Captain Sheridan and Delenn in order to put the vast power of that Machine at their disposal.  He dismissed them when the cowardly attack on Narn by the Centauri began.

     The Kha’Ri, in their desperation, had hoped to win one great battle, to hold a line against their night.  Shamefully, the Centauri had acted in the most dishonorable fashion possible, with Londo Mollari playing the crucial role.  Refusal to listen, on both sides, led to much pain.  Yet, the possibility of hope remained.

                  Shira’s addendum:                   

                 I was moved to tears thrice in this one episode.   First, watching the Centauri war crimes ala The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, then again, as G’Kar prays in vain, and then, finally, listening to his glorious words in Council chambers: “No tyrant…though it take a thousand years, we will be free.”  

     Such beauty, and such anguish.   So needless.  Like so much of human history, and human present day lives.

                And then, the hope:  those who “have sworn their lives, their fortunes, and their blood” (why not their “sacred honor” as in the rest of the original phrase??).  This army of light will hold the line against the darkness “no matter the cost.”

Minbari Mondays, Divided Loyalties and Who Are We?

       This week’s report, in our year 2259 CE, sent to us from our future by Ranger Mayann, writing to us from Minbar, where she is stationed:

Greetings, from Tuzanor:

        This incident takes place from 24 November 2nd, through December 1st, of your year 2259.  My order, on your Mars colony, lost members in the task of getting a message to your Babylon station.  The message was that we may not always know who we really are.

 

The Eye on Minbar section of your periodical, and your Captain teaching Delenn new and colorful vocabulary allow them to bond, in the early steps of their coming closeness.  And, each learns more of who the other really is.  From gathering needed intelligence proactively, as she does, to the colorful language that he uses, each is surprised by the other.

 

Delenn took charge of acting on our message, as the initial protector of your telepath, Lyta, the one most badly used, in the end.  But that will come out, in the end.  On the matter of self-knowledge, Delenn is nearest.

Minbari Mondays, In the Shadow of Z’ha’dum, and Decisions

       This week’s report, now that reports seem to have resumed from Epsilon 3,  is part of a letter, for an incident taking place on Sunday, 24 September  of our year 2259 CE, sent to us from our future by Ranger Mayann, writing to us from Minbar, where she is stationed:

Greetings, from Tuzanor:

“How many lives is a secret worth?”

     That is the central question, though not the only question, of this report.  My order, the Anla’Shok, had been waiting for over a thousand years for this time to come, and when it came, we were not ready.

     So we decided to keep the secret.

 

     That we knew of the coming darkness, that we knew the ancient enemy had returned, that we were preparing, and that you Humans, with your ability to build communities, were the key.

 

Because:

                                                                                                            Decisions Matter,

                                                                                        Planning Matters,

and

                                                           Community Matters.

     Shira’s addendum to Ranger Mayann’s report:   I love this episode!

     First, Vir decides to make a wish, involving Londo’s ‘friend’ Mr. Morden.  (And I’m sure that he was very careful what he wished for, as he very much *wanted* someone to get it!)  Seeing that alone is worth the pain of having been born, as they say: “Vale la pena haber nacido, nada màs por hacer/ver…”  (*  my favorite 16th century soldier).  

      It is gratifying to see how ‘little Vir’ stands up to being treated like a dog, by politely answering the famous question “What do you want?” with a devastatingly honest answer.

 

     Then there is Churchill’s face, as related by Captain Sheridan, now in a not so different situation, at least emotionally.

 

       And then, to cap it off, there is Sheridan’s Stoic response to the prediction of his death:

 

“Then I die.  But I will not go down easily, and I will not go down alone.”

Minbari Mondays, Knives, and, Empathy in The B5 Triangle

      This this week, there is no report from Ranger Mayann.  The Great Machine on Epsilon 3 must have a problem, Houston…

  So, my very short review for this week is that empathy is the most important means of communication between members of other species, and between ourselves, too!  In the end, both Londo’s problem with his long time friend, and Captain Sheridan’s problem with his new invisible friend have the same solution:  empathy.

 

     Too bad Londo didn’t figure that out sooner.

Minbari Mondays, And Now For A Word: Defend

      This  week reports an incident from Saturday, September 16th, of our year 2259 CE, sent to us from our future by Ranger Mayann, stationed on  Minbar:

—

      Greetings, from Tuzanor:

      This day was recorded in the anals of the Anla’Shok as one of great anguish for all of us.  Even down the years, my order recalls the pain of humiliation of Ambassador Delenn, and the pain of seeing so many lives wasted so brutally.  She spoke for the innocents, even after being played for an innocent by a brutal Human.  Your reporter, like her later counterpart, deliberately made our ambassador look badly.  Yet, she arose and defended the Narn innocents being slaughtered with courage, and with honor.  And with the astuteness we see when she goes on to lead my order.  The Centauri were indeed on the path to committing war crimes, with their mass drivers, that day.  Yet, the voice of G’Kar went unheard.

To our shame.

      At the end of this terrible day, Delenn recovered, and reminded us all that you Humans have the great gift of building communities, and are responsible to use that gift.  Keep building your communities. 

We are all in need of you.

     Shira’s addendum to Ranger Mayann’s report: 

     A word, or or a phrase, can bind us down the centuries.  Words like “Never Again.”   And also words like “a long line…”   That would be the line of our spiritual ancestors reminding us that duty comes in more than one form.  I think of this as “The Long Gray Line” episode.  That speech moves me to tears every time I read it. 

     Even if I now feel differently about much of Gen. Macarthur’s intent in that speech, it still never fails to stir awe at a man facing the twilight of his life, and looking forward to becoming part of that long line of those who admonish us to “make my life have meaning” in ways that do not involve the indiscriminate shedding of blood.  There is honor in defending the truth, defending those who, like this day’s Narn refugees, cannot defend themselves, and in defending peace.

     I still mourn the loss of those ideals in our society.  Already, in 1988 when I entered the US Naval Academy as a Midshipman 4th Class, it was clear that my classmates, upon commissioning in 1992, would hold very values different from those cadets of West Points addressed back in 1962, and not for the better.  That a soldier prays for peace, not a word in our time, when cadences were called glorifying brutality against “kids” and a plebe refusing to call those cadences could be punished, rather than complimented.  Nearly 40 years later, we see the shape of our new values, and I wonder how we can remember to defend the innocent, and to pray for peace, as the soldier described by the General does.

Minbari Mondays, There All the Honor Lies, and Mercy

      This  week’s is the 14th report for an incident taking place in August of our year 2259 CE, sent to us from our future by Ranger Mayann, writing to us from Minbar, where she is stationed:

      Greetings, from Tuzanor:

     This report brings great pain to remembrance.  This is not, however, a reason to hide the truth, nor from the truth.

     This incident  teaches us two things:

1. Truth and honor are closely related to mercy.

        2.  Captain Sheridan was wise enough to know when both truth and honor require mercy in order to stay whole.

     Shira’s addendum to Ranger Mayann’s report:  I never realized that the title to this episode was part of a famous poem (thank you, Junkyard!).   This episode never got me, really, except for one part. 

I love Londo’s comment:

“…I will have to kill you.  What are friends for?”

 I want friends like that.

includes two ‘imagination-rich’ walking tours, with songs, of Washington, DC. New interviews and research are woven into stories of old struggles shared by both the Jewish and African-American communities in the capital city.

Shared histories are explored from a new perspective of cultural parallels and parallel institution-building which brought the two communities together culturally and historically.

Minbari Mondays, “Hunter, Prey,” and Belief

      This  week’s is the 13th report for an incident taking place in July of our year 2259 CE, sent to us from our future by Ranger Mayann, writing to us from Minbar, where she is stationed:

      Greetings, from Tuzanor:

     This report comes from the incidental rumors collected at this time by a member of my order, who was aboard your Babylon station on other business, at the time.  This being a purely internal Earth affair, naturally the Anla’Shok have never heard of it, officially speaking.

     The incident in question revolves around the escape of a head physician of your martyred President Santiago.  Those in authority, at this point, wished for this physician to look guilty, and acted accordingly.  Your Babylon station’s command staff, looking upon the evidence, acted differently.  In allowing them to do so, Captain Sheridan and Commander Ivanova both showed the resourcefulness which would later result in each of them becoming, in due time, head of my order.

     Kosh the Good, at this point in your history looking more bad than good, at least to you, also played a crucial role in this incident, as we Minbari knew that the Vorlon generally did, in guiding our races.  But without the knowledge of this physician’s character, and the personal trust that your Dr. Franklin had for the man, neither Garibaldi nor the others involved in this rescue would have believed in the innocence of the physician, and acted to save him so that he could fight for the truth.

Thus:

                   Character Matters,

               Trust Matters,

and

       Belief Matters

     Shira’s addendum to Ranger Mayann’s report:  I love how the name of the assassinated president, Santiago, hearkens back to the rallying cry (“!Por Santiago!”) of the Reconquista (even if I do not love what the Reconquista actually stood for and comitted…).  This episode also does some major character building for Garibaldi and Franklin as friends, which will be very important shortly.    It also shows how the entire command staff is willing to bend or break the rules when necessary, to do the right thing.
