Turkish Tuesday: Sihirli Annem (s1e2) & Different Is Not Wrong

    Just before last week, we finished the first episode of this series.
  This week we are back to Sihirli Annem, starting on bölüm/episode 2.
(Note that my replies to these scheduled posts will continue to be slow this week..)
     And Dudu Fairy, Betüş’s mother, is still determined to separate Betüş from her husband simply because he is different (like interracial or same-sex marriage, we call that ‘hate’ these days, right?).
Nice of Dudu to wake her daughter early in the morning to send her a not so loving message, poor Betüş, who has to go out into the living room to hide the conversation from sleeping human (mortal) family members:

   Not everyone agrees with Dudu, of course, but not everyone has a say in the matter, either:

  -No one asked your opinion!
  -As her father, I can speak on this subject!
  But her father, being a mortal man (currently being punished by having to live as a dog) himself who is now being harshly oppressed for something he did not actually do, does not get a vote.
But he should.

  3. I was surprised about your answer and googled Defne. She died only 35 years old, what a pity. That is much too young to die.
    Nevra Serezli seems to be still alive, or did she die recently? 78 years old now as per Wikipedia and another website.

    1. I seem to recall a Turkish commentary somewhere about her death (I think in 2018 via #SihirliAnnem twitter ? ) about her passing.

      Defne Joy Foster got many remembrances, including in the credits of the episodes after she died. I believe that she meant a lot to many people.

        2. For me, in fact, this show is more about Eda, played by DJF, than about any other character, mostly. Her’s is the biggest character arc, I think, with the Eda character changing the most over the lifetime of the series (though Dudu Hannim also does change, it takes much longer, and the change is not as great, I think, though I only recall seeing up to about episode 105 or so…). Eda really grows and changes, painfully, but drastically and dramatically. Her character really teaches something about making difficult decisions and standing by them.

          (I can’t believe that I am nearly in tears thinking about her…)

          1. I think you are right. Most of the other characters are quite predictable at all times. Eda is struggling. She feels empathy, of which Dudu seems to be completely free. She is not a strong willed character, but a bit fearful. Now it seems that she acts in spite of her fears, which is real courage. I also liked her reasoning, why it was better not to marry a fairy.
            Suzan and Avni are a bit much. The only scene I found funny with them was, when Suzan started to dance around in the room basking her arms, imitating the flight of a fairy to catch her husband’s attention.
            I was surprised about Furize, who gave away Tarik and Eda. Bearing a grudge for such a long time and then not thinking about that she also hurt Eda with her action, does not seem to be in line with her usual kindness.

            I try not to think about Dafne being dead while I am watching the series, as that would make me very sad. I wonder if she had COVID, it says only “died of respiratory problems”. Poor girl … ❤

            1. Defne Joy Foster died many years before Covid, around 2010, if I recall correctly. For me, watching the series again, knowing that she “is no longer among us” (“aramizde degil”), yet still leaves us with worthwhile lessons to learn in wonderful ways, through this show, makes me feel happy for her contribution, and for her memory.

              I agree with and love your liking of her reasoning for not marrying a fellow Fairy.
              Don’t worry, Suzan gets better! 🙂

              I’ve forgotten about Firuze v. Tarik, so I’m really looking forward to getting to that set of episodes! All I remember is that Tarik temporarily became less lazy while in love with Eda!

              Back to DJF, I seem to recall some talk of suspicious circumstances surrounding her death, related to her severe asthma, at the home of a friend in Istanbul, if I recall the many conflicting details from the years ago. She was in the middle of filming an important section of the series, with her daughter in a critical stage, so I found it strange how I was unable to find episodes back in 2012 or 2013, past about episode 105 or so.
              Now I seem to see episodes up to 125, strangely, though they may be related to this horrible new version (started in 2011, I believe, but after watching part of the first episode of the new and more irritatingly pop-music like opening, I never tried any more of the new Sihirli Annem series).

            6. I have seen including no. 30 now, Eda is divorced again, Ceren has a boyfriend now who has the black belt in karate. But, as of no. 31 there aren’t any English subtitles anymore. I am not sure I will learn Turkish, but I am really sorry that I cannot see more of the series. 😦

            7. I’ll check opensubtitles.org, and if no one has translated and uploaded subtitles, I’ll start it -those are the best episodes of the series!!
              (I will make time to translate, but not create the srt file, as I hate trying to match the words to the exact second in the video. I just don’t have the patience for it) and I’ll translate each scene in those episodes if needed.

Hmm, I could sell if I were a registered translator, but I have used the captions translated by other volunteers to practice my Turkish and French for films freely donated, so I feel that I should also contribute, although this is a huge task. It if allows you to enjoy Sihirli Annem, though, and others as well, it will have been worth it. But I do want to finish learning basic Esperanto before I dive into the Turkish-English translations (and see if a Turkish volunteer is around, as they’d get more benefit out of it, for employment and social reasons…).

            13. What you could do that would help me would be to send me 5 or 6 screen shots from each episode that you want me to translate, so that saves me from having to pick and screen capture from those episodes, and it is then much faster for me to translate and post it.

              You can start with episode 31, and I will schedule them ahead of time (I wish there were a way to let you see posts before they are live), and send you the translations of the scenes that you want in English.

      1. I had the genius idea to try and copy (write) the Turkish subtitles down and put them through Google translate, so that you would only have to check the translation, but … from no. 31 there aren’t even Turkish subtitles. So, another good idea that proved useless. 😉 🙂
        But it also means that in the screen prints will not appear Turkish subtitles.
