My Historical Fiction, Published, and In Progress: Ann & Anna, vs. Who By Fire

All of my publications, workshops, and even song events, listed together in a rather long list that is first summarized in a grid, can be found here.

My published historical fiction is a serial short story called Ann & Anna, posting each Sunday. (my abandoned project Who By Fire rough draft scenes will be listed below, to go directly to the Who By Fire rough draft scenes, click here…

Ann & Anna was inspired by a nightmare, and also by the daring escape of Anna Marie Weems, in 1855. The series took off from there as a modification of their shared story, which then turned into more than that: Ann & Anna:

Parts 22 (Prequel to the Ann&Anna based novel in progress, Concluded),

20 (Into The Night),

19 (Peculiar Gifts),

14 (Words),

13 (Interruptions),

and 1 (Nightmares)

of

the series in which two women escape bondage , have posted on

previous Sundays a few years ago…

Before that:

A nearly historical practice novel, Hubris and Hemlock, set in the early 1990’s, deals with Black-Jewish conversion and identity , among other empathy-related issues.

and

Another empathy-building short story (not historical) in line with Project Do Better is But by the Grace

My recently shelved historical fiction WiP, working title Who By Fire (I got side-tracked in March ’21 by Project Do Better…):

I began writing this historical portal fantasy novel in June, 2020, when certain characters would not let me alone, and my ancestors seemed to demand that I write.

23 September, 12020: was there a public library in 1838 Baltimore, and could Jewish or Colored people use it?
Working in a way to reference a classic, like the 1001 Nights, which would have been known in 1838…
Lucy, the -Protagonist’s Wife (J. Bell’s The Quadroon: Public Domain image from NYMet…)

My old Work In Progress: Who By Fire: I Will -Book 1

Who by Fire: I Will is a historical fantasy trilogy.

Working Cover for historical fantasy WiP

Tagline:

“Forever is a very long time.”

Logline:

To save his son, a desperate escaped slave must make a choice, but the price is eternally high.

The main protagonist is an escaped slave, who intends to buy his wife’s freedom before it is too late…

I will be listing the scenes of my now abandoned rough draft from this project here shortly…

WhoByFireScns

Who By Fire: I Will, was intended to become a historical fantasy trilogy, but other works have come so much easier that I finally had to recognize that this is not the story I really want to tell. So I am letting it go, while posting what I have done for this novel, in the event that some other writer of Black Historical Fantasy might like to pick up where I left off. If that turns out to be the case, I will happily collaborate with such a person and share the authors’ writes, or cede them if need be, so that this work can go out into the world to “bear witness,” as Toni Morrison has said.

What was my Next planned novel (but got pushed aside for the sequel to Ann & Anna, which turned into a slightly different novel altogether…) :

Working title might be “Concussions and Conversions: a family’s journey from triumph to tragedy in Oklahoma” or some similiar title, based on the story of my gr gr grandfather Wayne Anthony Manzilla, and how his murder affected his wife, mother, siblings and 5 children, down through right to my generation.

  1. I’m still dying to get back to active work on Who By Fire, even as I realize that Ann&Anna is actually becoming more of a serial novella or novel, than just a short story. It’s taking up far more attention of mine than I’d expected, but given the feedback I’m getting, it is worth it: I am learning my craft, apparently. I will need every bit of that learning and feedback, Thoughtful Readers, to get Who By Fire right. Thank you for struggling by my side, as we become Siblings In Arms for Justice, my friends.
