Thoughts on a new Historical Fiction short short series on Sundays

It is interesting to me how a story can grab you, or maybe the characters in a story grab you, and refuse to let you go until you’ve told their story.  That is what has happened since this previous Sunday, and the day that began with a bad dream, has ended this week with hope.  I guess that is what stories are supposed to do, no?

The series will be tagged Ann&Anna, although I can’t get that ampersand symbol to take as part of the tag on WordPress.  Some of this comes out of my own family history, but  I hope that we will all be able  enjoy it.  Ann and Anna, Number 1, posted back on Sunday.  Number 2 will be this coming Sunday.

And, Dear Readers, I also hope that this series will move you to learn more ways to help use our history to build new tools.

I look forward to your thoughts.

Action Items:

1.) Please share your thoughts on using history, even painful history, to “build back better” as we say, now?

2.)  Share your thoughts on how continuing empathy-building cooperation might help, or hinder, inclusive thinking.

3.) Write a story, post or tweet that uses those thoughts.

  2. Humans are programmed to like/want/need stories. I think that is one of the best ways to get histories, ideas, or facts across. I learned so much about your initial post on Fancies and am afraid I missed the continuation of that story.l

      Yes, I keep noticing this, to my dismay. It would be so much more practical to just learn via the facts, but I see that story does move people so much more.
      And no, you’ve not missed the continuation: it posts tomorrow.

        1. I hope it doesn’t disappoint. I’m juggling story ideas now for several lengths, including a Frame story, another long-ish short story that I’ve been chewing on for a while that a friend desperately does not want me to write (he seems to think it may get me locked up), and a short short that I’ve been wanting to write for a while, based on a fight I broke up when I was still officially a PhD student, and should have known better. 🙂 But the priority is Do Better, which has been taking all of my energy. Now that the first draft is done, I can let it rest for a bit, and come back to some short story writing while I work on my novel WiP (Who By Fire) outlines again. This series is set close enough that one of the Anns might even have been able to meet some of the characters in Who By Fire.

          I’m also working on putting some Do Better excerpts together with some of these shorts as blog posts to use the stories as motivators for the parts of the Phases of the Do Better vision, to show where it comes from.

              Too late..

              But the list does have numbers, in priority order, if that helps?
              Do Better is at the top, and all of the stories should be in the supporting role, so I may start linking them to different Wondering Wednesdays posts, as and when they relate.

    1. Thanks, though I hope it doesn’t trigger you. This series started a bit dark, as is my novel WiP, Who By Fire. But thinking of this second short in the series made me laugh, and that was the thought that brought me to the idea that last week’s dream could become a redemptive series of shorts, set in the same time period (about 17 years later, but same area) as Fire. So it also gets me back into the novel, which I’ve been neglecting in favor of Do Better.

        1. Good to know. No one has said anything, but it occurred to me later that I might want to do so for last Sunday’s post, Ann and Anna #1, (title is Some Dreams Best Forgotten, on the post) despite the obvious historical setting. Not sure.
          I’m not even sure what words I would use for this one.

            1. Not inspiration, I never have a shortage of story ideas, but rather the “trigger” words: I think certain words are used for certain trigger warnings, but I don’t know exactly what they all mean in any given context, and since this is historical fiction about slavery, readers would have to expect a certain amount of discomfort, right?

        1. Well, not cleaning up, just telling me things I already knew, but also knew that I’ve been trying to make something keep that really won’t keep. I want to get both of my WiPs finished and at least publishable, if not agented, before I do anything more. The problem is that staying in this place may actually be slowing that work down. But a leap into the unknown is more unsettling, and likely to be less productive than currently, so my energy is best used here. Not a good situation, but making do.
