old Day 41/67 of GED in Five Months, cycles, and, “Wh” questions

The current version of this lesson set is here

Adulting often requires Public Library resources to answer important questions about issues ranging from the life cycle of an organism, as in today’s science reading, to election cycles.  Or resources like the old “Who’s Who…” books that recorded facts like the number of presidents who have been impeached, and why.  Questions like why, where, when, and of course, how, are key to understanding all sides of any issue, from biology to sociology, and our daily lives.

 Week 11/18
Day 41 Wk 11
Grammar: writing a paragraph

Day 41 Exit Ticket

(Day 40Day 42)

Action Items:

1.) Why might it be important to understand the life cycle of various organisms?

2.) Please explain how it may (or may not) help citizens of a Republic…

3.) Write a book, story, blog post or tweet that uses those thoughts, and then, please tell us about it! If you write a book, once it is published please consider donating a copy to your local public library.

4.)  Feel free to answer the exit ticket questions in the comments, or pose any other questions you may have about the lesson, if you wish.

(Day 1Day 5)

Stayed on Freedom’s Call
(free copies at: https://archive.org/details/StayedOnF…)
includes two ‘imagination-rich’ walking tours, with songs, of Washington, DC. New interviews and research are woven into stories of old struggles shared by both the Jewish and African-American communities in the capital city.

Shared histories are explored from a new perspective of cultural parallels and parallel institution-building which brought the two communities together culturally and historically.

Please leave a review, if you can, on the GoodReads page.

  1. 1. In that regard, it may be useful to know about the life cycle of an organism in different regions (of one’s own country flora and fauna or globally) and how the organism is interconnected with its environment and the food chain. Even if it is just a simplified life cycle that one has learned.

    2. The life cycle (and how the organism interacts with its environment, i.e. natural balance) could spark the interest of youth and get them interested in the sciences. A citizen could make an informed decision when it comes to projects such as oil pipelines:

The oil pipeline disrupts the life cycle of the organism -> the organism is reduced it its numbers or may even become extinct -> once the organism is gone/greatly reduced, the environment is disrupted which leads to negative impacts on the community in that (and other) area(s) -> the livelihood of hundreds if not thousands of people is jeopardized (e.g. fishers)

With that in mind, the citizen concludes the oil pipeline is not worth the long-term damage and the community invests in renewable energy instead.

Overall, by beginning with the life cycle and adding the connections and natural interdependence, it would be of great use for the citizens. Even to the individuals own actions (e.g. participating in organisations that fight for green energy and environmental protection).

    1. Wonderful reply, Thomas, thank you for this fascinating Action Item response!
This is precisely what I had hoped for: a logical conclusion for the long-term concerns to the community, based on understanding of basic science and logic, leading to a more rational and ethical choice (renewable energy), in the place of the unsustainable pipelines, from both the individual and the community perspective.
      Thank you, so much!

      Shira
