Turkish Tuesday, Sihirli Annem (My Magical Mom) s1e42: Old Jealousies Die Hard

The episode begins with everyone preparing to go visit the grave of the kids deceased mother.  Cem has a picture of her.  Upstairs, Betüş and Çilek are creating a magical bouquet of flowers to lay on the grave, which Betüş hopes the family will like, and little Çilek reassures her that they certainly will not be angry, and that the kids defunct mother would be happy with Betüş, saying that it is because no one other than Betüş would do such a thoughtful thing.  Betüş replies that ‘if the kids mother is the kind of person that the kids and Sadık has told her, then she will definitely fin a way to send a sign of her approval.’

We also see a fun bit of Turkish culture.  Just as we explained last episode that younger people address older generations in a certain way, they also kiss the hand (actually first touch the hand to the forehead and then kiss it) of the older person as a sign of respect for age.  Eda being a fairy, the culture does not include this, and she has to learn it from her boyfriend’s father, who is a more traditional person than Betüş and Sadık are raising their kids to be.  Obviously, when Dudu finds out that Eda has gone to meet with Yavuz, she is angry with Taci for hiding this fact, and goes to see her boyfriend, Yavuz’s father.  When he seems to disagree with her about allowing the kids to see one another, she takes matters into her own hands, as usual, doing magic to make the young man suddenly begin treating Eda very coldly.

Suzan and Avni are having their usual spat, and the kids also have a spat, Ceren calling her brother Cem a pig, which is a very bad insult in Turkey, for his insistence that she cannot have a boyfriend, but that his girlfriend can come with them to visit their mother’s grave.   Only Perihan is busy doing good, delivering presents for mothers who are alone, for which Betüş insists on helping, as she is also a Good Fairy, and since her earliest childhood has always dreamed of being helping human beings as part of her duty as a Good Fairy.  The lone strange thing on this holiday is Taci.  He reminds Perihan that he is a person, only appearing to look like a dog and sounding like a dog due to the spell put on him by Dudu so many years ago.  But his ability, suddenly, to answer the telephone and be heard by normal human beings, who do not know about the existence of Fairies, as Perihan explains to him, may mean that her horrible bit of magic over him is finally starting to wear off, and he may be reverting bit by bit to his original human form.  He is delighted by this news, of course, even though it is not yet verified.  But Perihan pulls him up short with the warning that Dudu will certainly not be pleased with this news, and would likely take steps to prevent him from regaining his human form.  This theory is harshly verified when Dudu sees and misinterprets the reassuring hug Perihan gives Taci as something else, and binds them both before sending them away.  She’s busy crying over her assumed betrayal when Eda arrives demanding to know whether Yavuz’ coldness is due to magic done by Dudu.  Dudu spits it out along with her accusation of being betrayed by her best friend and ex-husband, which Eda attempts to point out is ridiculous for various reasons.  Then she has to go search for the still tied up and freezing Taci and Perihan, whom Betüş runs into on her way back from delivering presents.  Released from their bonds, Taci hides with the family while Perihan goes to get more powerful help dealing with Dudu.  In the meantime, Suzan surprises Avni at his usual spying on the family home, while the kids are still arguing, and Keren, Ceren’s boyfriend, greets her father in the traditional manner, as Eda did not know how to do earlier when greeting Yavuz’s father.  Eda ends up meeting up with and going together with Perihan to complain about Dudu’s illicit uses of magic.  Dudu ends up with a very high level visit to straighten things out.  And to learn what her punishment is.  Naturally, after that visit, Dudu decides to find out what really happened between Taci and Perihan, and of course learns the even more important fact (still refusing to believe that Perihan and Taci never betrayed her, and do not want to be together) of Taci’s slow return to his human state, and decides to run the risk of a worse punishment in order to prevent his return to his original form.  Sadly, no one is able to prevent this tragedy, and Taci is doomed to continue in his form as a dog for the foreseeable future.

To make things worse, Avni saw the whole thing, and rushes Suzan over to the family house while Taci insists that he never betrayed (cheated on) Dudu, and Eda insists that she will continue to see Yavuz.  As the kids arrive from their holiday shopping, Suzan begins to punish Avni, completing this bizarre episode.  The only main theme that I can see is jealously, both on Dudu’s part, and on the part of Cem.  Neither of them is right.
