We can Do Better Wednesdays, & Taking My Courage in Both Hands…

Here’s a saying from the French “Prendre le couage de/dans mes deux mains…” or as we might have said a few years ago, to “take my courage in hand” and do something scary, like sending the Project Do Better book link to folks like ONE DC, or Yuval N. Harari.

I really wish I had others to work on this with.

But these bits of paper on my desk are driving me crazy, so I guess I’ll just have to try.

We can Do Better Wednesdays, & What is Graciousness?

    Here’s another dead darling:

In this way (via Phase II) we may move from a society where rudeness is too often the norm, to one in which graciousness is valued. As one example of graciousness, a wheel-chair bound friend told this story. A person’s dog snarled at her, and the owner apologized, which was the civil thing to do. Going one step further, the person then offered to call a cab for her, which was the gracious thing to do. A society in which graciousness is valued will be both a more compassionate society and a more creative one. It is this new way of assuring and certifying Service Adult status that has the potential to drive real and sustainable cultural change. As Phase II progresses and more people step up to take the Adulthood Service Challenge, an increasing thirst to help improve other communities outside of our country may develop, as well. Yet, we have much to do first, to clean up our own house.

This story was out of place in the Do Better manifesto, as an academic book, so it had to be cut.

We can Do Better Wednesdays, & the CCC for Modern Adulthood?

How a new CCC and even a new Serving Adulthood cadre helps us all.  Updating the original mandate from that of the Roosevelt administration, to a modern setting, can help: eleanor_roosevelt_at_civilian_conservation_corps_camp_in_yosemite2c_california_-_nara_-_196548 Excerpt from the old chapter 8, now chapter 7:

Meeting and interacting with other cultures from a living and working point of view also provides a vastly different experience from that of tourism, and facilitates freedom of thought, freedom of worship, and new ideas for fuller interaction in governance mechanisms at all levels, by challenging received ideas.

Who would be interested in leading leading this challenge, do you imagine?

Do Better Wednesdays, & An American Salt March?

A tool building related prompt from chapter 8, if we could find something as useful to do as making salt in defiance of an oppressive and economically fundamental law:

“Pilgrimage for empathy and Human Rights across the USA”

Who would be interested in leading such a march, do you imagine, or maybe just starting a walking group in your area?

And walking is a harmonious tool for keeping both the body and the mind sound, or making it sound if it is not.

We can Do Better Wednesdays, & A Cure for Loneliness?

A question from (the now removed) chapter 6:

From food pantries to our own food, steps can be designed to build in that way,
also, as networks of volunteers design systems of daily food distribution, starting with
individuals, and working up to entire towns and cities, so that no one is ever forgotten, left out,
or entirely alone.

What ways can you think of to ensure that no one is ever left out?

Do Better Wednesdays, Libraries Working for All, and Wind Turbines in Africa??

A  prompt from old chapter 7, with the old chapter 10 tie-ins that require a world-class library system in every neighborhood:

“I just gave a free debt law workshop at my local library as part of #ProjectDoBetter!”

How many folks recall that Mr. Kamkwamba, the 14 year old boy in the film The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, build that wind turbine thanks to having a library with books that helped him figure out how to build it (Ejiofor, 2019)? More about this in Phase IV…

We can Do Better Wednesdays, Transportation for All

    A comment  from chapter 6:

 Since more investment in mass
transit may entail less investment in car related infrastructure, it is to be reminded that true
freedom is not the ability to pollute and speed at will, but the ability to have real input in where
one’s tax dollars are spent, to travel peaceably and affordably across any span of continent in
order to walk in clean spaces with fresh air, and to do so while enjoying civil, or better still,
harmonious relations with one’s fellow human beings. T

Do Better Wednesdays, Walk for Libraries Prompt

Introducing a new prompt from the old chapter 7 (and the outline of old chapter 10’s Introduction…):  how would you start a daily ‘walk to our library’ group?

How many branch libraries do you have in your part of town, and how far a walk is the most convenient one for you?
