About ShiraDest aka The “Brolly Lady”

Shira Destinie A. Jones, aka ShiraDest, but mostly  known as Shira, these days (except for those Bathonians who call her the “Brolly Lady” with explanation below…), is the author of Stayed on Freedom’s Call and founder of  Project Do Better.  A native Washingtonian, she draws much of her inspiration from family history, particularly her DC based Booth and Faxio, MD based Hall and Porter, Virginia originating (Byrd Plantation) Mayo, and VA to OH Manzilla, and (originally from KS) OK based West ancestors.  She is a former DC Tour Guide and Founder of SHIR Tours,  a published academic, educator, and an aspiring Historical Fantasy novelist.  She has also been a community organizer, Voluntary Simplicity adherent, Ranked Choice Voting (aka IRV) advocate, and educator.  She is still working to build strong Public Domain social Infrastructure (#PublicDomainInfrastructure) as part of Phase I of Project Do Better, and welcomes others to join in this work, especially if they’d like to write guest blog posts for Project Do Better’s extremely wide range of areas:

1.) Public Transportation,

2.) Public Libraries,

3.) ProBono Legal & Consumer Education particularly around housing issues, &

4.) Universal Health Care.

She believes that our Public Domain social Infrastructure, starting with these four key parts,  need to be under girded by adopting a Universal Basic Income, possibly supplemented by a Federal Jobs Guarantee.  She has organized community events such as film discussions, multi-ethnic song events and cooperative presentations in her native city of Washington, DC and abroad. She can be contacted by leaving a comment on any blog post associated with this website, or via this contact page,

or
via LinkedIn, and sometimes (not checked with frequency) also on Academia.edu.

She has also been a writer of reviews and stories on:

Working to help build peace, cultural change and cooperative community by helping to restore and rebuild our Public Domain Infrastructure (#PublicDomainInfrastructure): Libraries, ProBono Legal & Consumer Education, Universal Health Care & a Universal Basic Income. This follows, imho, in the example of William James, Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and R. Hillel.   Some ways we can all help do this include:

0.  Sharing Non-Violent Communication and the Holocene Calendar to build inclusive cultural change via reading library books, writing each person’s autobiography or story or song, and advocating for each other, thus helping to change our culture,

1. Banking small (Credit Unions, Nef, Credit Cooperatif),
2. Buying local (local Coops and farmers markets),
3. ‘BMW’ing (Bike/Metro/Walk),
4. Using renewable energy providers (EnerCoop),
5. Living Simply: RRR, go Veg./Locavore, FreeCycle, Compost, etc…
6. Supporting Worker’s Coops, Food Coops, funding for HeadStart and early childhood programs,
7. Living in Intentional Community that uses Participatory Decision-making or consensus based decision-making, advocating Instant Runoff Voting, learning about Sortition…

is a set of parts of our social infrastructure, those institutions that keep our social fabric together, which are, or ought to be, free and freely available to all members of the public, hence part of the public domain. I have picked 4 items I see as most crucial, only for simplicity’s sake:

1.Free and full access to well funded and diverse Public Libraries
2.Pro-Bono Legal aide and Free intensive (especially debt-related) Consumer and Financial Continuing Education,
3.Universal Health Care on a Single Payer System,
and
4. Good low-cost extensive Public Transportation.

  1. Hello, Bob:

Thank you, I love to meet a kindred spirit! I’d be happy to read your offering, once I’m done editing my nonfiction WiP. I’m so swamped at the moment that I’ve not even had time to work on my fiction WiP, so please forgive me if I must put off your kind offer of Lifting the Gloom, for a while.

Great to meet you, and I hope that you will find something of value in my work, as well. If you have time to follow me, you will see that I’ve got several free books on offer, and am delighted to have any feedback on my current priority WiP, Do Better.

    Warmly,
    Shira
