Review: Le Château des Carpathes, and Jules Verne’s Cautionary Tale?

Once again, thank you to Librivox.org.  Waiting on pins and needles as I schedule this for Lupin Part 3 to start up again, with Omar Sy!!!

This book makes a rather descriptive and rather predictable cautionary tale. Yes it is very true that any technology, not necessarily even sufficiently advanced , merely sufficiently different from what is already known, can be used to exploit. People who have not seen that technology and are superstitious can certainly be convinced that it is Magic.
Il y a beaucoup de description…
Has a lot of description…”

Vraiment ?! Quelle façon de”break the 4wall!!””

“Beau gauntlet !!”
“Is it bad when the end notes are more interesting than the story?”
“#education: ils connaissent pas l’électricité, ces gens ? Bon, il faut croire que si ils connaissent pas le longvu, c’est-à-dire un télescope, donc ils ne connaissent pas l’électricité non plus.

I guess if they’ve never seen a telescope, that would explain why they don’t recognize the effects of an electrified fence. Or at least that’s what it looks like at the moment…”

“Description, description, description, and too predictable.

A good cautionary tale, perhaps, of the fact that any technology especially sufficiently advanced but any technology unknown to people who are superstitious will appear as magic and they will be able to be exploited. Easily.”

Sorry, M. Verne is no Dumas.

    1. Yes, I like Sir Arthur’s writing, and I am familiar with Journey, but I don’t think I’ve read or listened to it. Now I will have to go find it on Librivox (all of Vernes’ works seem to be there, alas, unlike Dumas, at least in French…)
