I found this letter absolutely shocking. Not for the content, as I already knew the history of the Dreyfus Affair, but for the incredible way that Emile Zola denounces pretty much the entire French government, from the military to the President himself, as guilty of covering up the truth. I did not know that Zola sent this letter to the Aurore knowing that publishing it was illegal, and would land him in mortal danger (or not mortal, thanks L.BelleTriste for your comment on that point…). Very good reason for Fabienne B. to name her dog J’Accuse!!

Yes indeed– Zola wanted to be taken to court so that the details could be aired in a public forum.

Ah, right, I read that somewhere, but did he realize the threat to his life, as well?

No, he was overly optimistic. Also, the military were able to restrict what evidence appeared in court because of “military secrets”. So the trial didn’t go exactly as he thought it would!
