Last night I dreamt that I was 3000 miles away, in the location where my WiP is (mostly) set, explaining to a lady…
–who seemed to be buying a copy of my novel, which I was signing!
So, she commented that Harriet Tubman had mentioned that after being whipped, they put salt and cayenne into the wound so it would hurt even more, but I pointed out, without contradicting the issue of pain (as slave-holders indeed wanted to maximize the suffering of slaves being punished, as an example to frighten everyone into submission), that both salt and cayenne are also known anti-infection agents used in folk remedies. Slaves, even recalcitrant ones, were valuable property, and infections lowered productivity, so that mixture was primarily to prevent the loss of a working piece of human property, from the owners and overseers points of view, and even from the healer’s point of view, although if they wanted to heal, primarily, there were other less painful ways of preventing infection (like not whipping in the first place!).
Then I woke up thinking that I needed to add that part about using salt&cayenne to the scene where one of the field hands has just been whipped. But every time I try to write it in, I find something else I forgot to do that needs my attention!
Am I losing it?
